In any business but especially a small business, hiring the wrong candidate can be crippling. In a recent blog post by business performance expert and ERA Real Estate keynote speaker Ryan Estis brought to light 5 hiring mistakes to avoid.

  • Be patient. Be diligent in assessing each candidate’s competency.
  • Be honest. Do not oversell the job. Be transparent about the amount of skill, time and work the position requires.
  • Be open. Ryan states he tried to hire people like himself but that many of his top producers were not much like him. Review a diversified portfolio of candidates and be open to new ideas, appearances, etc.
  • Stick with the facts. Refrain from making a decision on gut instinct. If you have done your due diligence in researching and getting to know the candidate and their capabilities, you should be able to make a solid decision, based on facts.
  • Act immediately. If you realize you made a hiring misstep, correct it right away. Trying to coach an employee into a position that is not the right fit, costs the company time and money and is unfair to you, the employee and their clients and co-workers.
