According to the responses from our most recent internal broker survey, the ERA network is seeing an uptick in demand for 55+ communities in many regions across the country. Scott Lauri, broker/owner of ERA Central Levinson, recently shared his thoughts around what Baby Boomers in the Monroe Township, NJ region are looking for.

“For starters, steer clear of the phrase ‘retirement community’ when listing a property,” Scott explains. “The term makes older buyers feel just that, old.” Instead, Scott’s team refers to these properties as ‘active-adult communities.’ This reflects the evolution of these neighborhoods to a place where retirees, for example, can enjoy this time of their lives without having to worry about  major home maintenance or landscaping responsibilities.

Many Baby Boomers are looking for neighborhoods that offer amenities as well. They prefer communities with pools, golf courses, tennis courts and the like – which provide endless activities without the stress of upkeep. Older buyers are willing to pay for these perks as well – with  many of these fully-equipped properties start around $300,000 – and they’re not all drastically down-sizing
