Call them rock stars.  Call them top producers.  But whatever you do, don’t call them unengaged.  I’m talking about employees – your employees.

Finding and keeping the right people in the right positions is critical to your company’s culture, value-add and overall success.  So how do you manage to keep them happy and engaged so that in turn, your customers are happy and purchasing?

Business performance expert Ryan Estis shared a few keys to engagement during an appearance at a recent ERA Real Estate event and now it’s our pleasure to pay it forward.

  • Define your culture.  It is imperative to know who you are, where you fit in the world and what type of people and skills will help drive your mission. Define the type of person who will match your culture and hire them – modest, fun, outgoing – what type of personality are you looking for?
  • Develop your people.  Give your team every opportunity to learn, hone their skills and try new things.
  • Be likable.  This means you should be approachable, flexible and open-minded.  Employees want to feel comfortable around you, not afraid of you.
  • Be supportive. Empower your staff to make decisions and learn from them.  Support those decisions and your people.
  • Encourage personal achievement on the job.  People want their contributions to determine their destiny.  Give your employees the opportunity to reach new heights at your company and then  . . .
  • Recognize their good work. Recognition is a major motivating factor for most employees and really helps bring out the best performance in people.  Develop a recognition program or simply say “thank you.”  You’ll be surprised how effectively a little reward can drive success.
