Real estate reporters and writers recently gathered in New Orleans for the National Association of Real Estate Editors annual conference and spent some time discussing how they use social media.

Here are four take-ways that you can apply in your real estate practice.

Instagram – Got a cool picture of a house or a neighborhood? Reporters often tag people they think might be interested in a certain photo to bring it to their attention.

Twitter – This is the platform for influencers – people who can connect you with people.  Reporters will follow potential sources for stories. Tap into the sphere of influencers to expand your own sphere.

Snapchat – What started out as the platform for pre-teens is now used by more mature organizations like CNN, the Wall Street Journal and the White House. Many retailers are using Snap Chat to communicate timely coupons or promotions.  For realtors, homes new on the market or just sold are great “breaking news” items to deliver on Snap Chat.

Yik Yak –A new location based social network popular on college campuses, Yik Yak helps people connect to those around them. Users share news, jokes, advice in a casual, accessible, sincere manner. While not widely used, this is a great place to personally connect on a very local level with the people who live in the neighborhoods you serve.

With a growing number of social media channels out there, it’s important to remember you don’t have to be active on all of them. But understanding how new platforms work and who they appeal to can help you reach potential clients that align with YOUR business plan.  So what are you waiting for? Let’s get social!
